How Gary at GPS Electrical goes above & beyond

With over 30 years of experience as an electrician, Gary Partridge knew it was time to go out on his own and build his own business.

Almost a decade has passed since Gary made the decision to start GPS Electrical.

During that time, he worked hard and continues to work hard to provide electrical work, security systems, re-wiring, lighting, and much more for his customers.

A lightbulb moment

In his old position, Gary felt like he simply wasn’t reaching his potential.

He wanted a change and was willing to work hard for it.

After building a portfolio of customers from his previous job, he was able to transition from part to full time and quit his old job.

I love meeting new people and facing new challenges in my job. I’ve been gifted in having some amazing clients to work with, and many have become friends which is just amazing. I no longer go to work wishing I didn’t have to go. I love what I do and I do it with passion.

Knowing there is still a long way to go, Gary keeps his goals in mind and goes above and beyond every time.

He experimented with different marketing methods, finding what worked and what didn’t.

After hand-delivering 2500 flyers and receiving only two phone calls and zero follow-ups, Gary began to re-focus his efforts.

I found that word of mouth was definitely the best form of advertising, so I worked hard on getting as many reviews as I possibly could. Working long hours with low pay was the only way forward and ensured the survival of the business.

In an effort to come across as more professional, Gary got a new uniform and business name.

He credits much of his success to simply respecting each property and cleaning up any mess he makes.

Gary outlined that finding new clients, knowing where to start and affording equipment was the most difficult part of starting a business.

He also recalled that constantly searching for new business, doing quotes and chasing money was extremely stressful and hard to balance while working at the same time.

He used to struggle to invoice his clients and his old system required him to handwrite much of the paperwork, meaning he had to work when he got home as well.

When I stumbled across Bookipi, my only regret was that I didn’t find it sooner. I can now invoice, quote and book appointments as well as see who has and hasn’t paid me, so I can send reminders whilst I’m the go. I’ve since purchased an iPad for the business and this app works well on that device, pc and mobile phone. It’s amazing!

His advice for budding entrepreneurs

Gary’s favourite part of the job is being able to help people who are stressed or feel unsafe and make them feel reassured with his quality electrical and security work.

His advice to other business owners is:

  • Get Bookipi. Its a must for people like me, tradesmen.

  • Look after your customers. Otherwise, someone else will.

  • Be honest, reliable, polite and extremely clean.

  • Keep your customers updated at all times.

  • Showcase your work and ask for reviews.

I’m an electrician, not a secretary, but thanks to Bookipi, I’ll never need to be. Bookipi works with me, not for me.
